WHAT IS SICKLE CELL DISEASE?
Sickle cell disease is a chronic illness where the red blood cells, which normally are round and flexible, become stiff and shaped like a sickle (a curved blade). These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow, causing pain, anemia, and other health problems. Since it’s a chronic condition, sickle cell disease lasts for a lifetime, and while there’s no cure, treatments can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.
