WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers, called myelin. This damage disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to symptoms like fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, and problems with vision or coordination. MS can vary in severity and can cause periods of worsening symptoms (called flare-ups) and periods of improvement. There’s no cure for MS, but treatments can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
